Our garden was established in 2012 by Mrs. Estadt and Ms. Fleckenstein with the generous support of Greenock PTO. We started with 11 raised beds and have grown to include a worm viewer, root viewer, flower planters, picnic tables, and compost bins. We are grateful for additional contributions from the PTO as well as grant funding from Let's Move Pittsburgh written with Mrs. Hoffman.
Raised planters, picnic tables, and viewers were built by EF High School students, and many of our plants have been donated by Chelsea's Greenhouse and the EFHS Greenhouse.
Our demonstration kitchen was completed in fall of 2016. We have 4 cooking surfaces as well as a convection oven. Also, we have seating and tables, plates and utensils, and cooking essentials such as pots and pans.
Last summer, we added an irrigation system to reduce water waste. We will continue our fundraising efforts with hope to advance our garden books lending library. Also, this fall we grew lettuce in our new hydroponics lab.
Our first adult cooking class took place this fall. With generous support from Cooking Matters through 412Food Rescue, we provided cooking lessons and groceries for 9 Greenock families. We will continue Cooking Matters soon.
Thank you to everyone for their generous support of the Greenock garden!!
